Flights and the future of jet fuel

Sasol on Tuesday said the development of a synthetic jet fuel means the local aviation market will not have to depend on global oil reserves any longer.

The company made history on Tuesday by flying the first-ever commercial airliner powered solely by synthetic jet fuel from Johannesburg to Cape Town. The fuel is made from coal rather than crude oil and burns cleaner than current petroleum-based jet fuels.

Speaking through the PA system on the Boeing 737 used for the maiden flight Sasol’s Paul Morgan said research into this technology started almost 20 years ago. They have turned coal into liquid fuel but never before taken jet fuel from coal and used it in a commercial airline. It is great to see Sasol being leaders again!

Stop ... anytime is Holiday time ... for you .... in South Africa

Legendary pianist gives an exclusive soiree at Ellerman House, Cape Town.

On Friday, the 17th of September, a legendary pianist that enjoys worldwide recognition for his remarkable musical genius gave an exclusive soiree at Ellerman House, Cape Town.
Guests enjoyed pre-dinner champagne & canapes, and after the unforgettable performance indulged in a food and wine pairing with Waterford Wines.

David Helfgott soared to international fame after the release of the Oscar award-winning film ‘Shine’, in which Geoffrey Rush gave a compassionate portrayal of the pianist. The movie depicted key events in the early life of the concert pianist, whose career was interrupted by ill health in the 1970s before he re-established himself in the mid-1980s.

Helfgott’s truly exceptional story has inspired people across the globe. Born in Melbourne to Polish-Jewish parents, his musical talent was obvious from an early age and he was known as a child prodigy. He went to study at the renowned Royal College of Music in London at the age of 19. Towards the end of his studies he suffered an unfortunate physical breakdown and had to return to Australia. Over the years he managed to overcome his illness with the help of a friend and his wife, Gillian. Since his remarkable comeback to the concert stage, he has been touring all over the world, giving recitals that inspire and move people from all walks of life.

Ellerman House was the perfect setting for David Helfgott to perform in. This luxurious historic boutique hotel is the quintessential location for discerning guests accustomed to the finer pleasures of life. Unsurpassed, sweeping views from Bantry Bay across the Atlantic Ocean to Robben Island are a privileged pleasure from the private balconies and the unrivalled terraces surrounding the large, heated swimming pool. Ellerman House also has two of the finest collections of South African original art and vintage wines, each individually selected to enhance guests’ experience.

And to round off the most incredible evening, the exquisite dinner created by acclaimed international chefs displayed to perfection on china, silver and crystal was paired with Waterford Wines. Waterford was established in 1998 when Jeremy and Leigh Ord acquired 120Ha of prime Stellenbosch vineyard land which is nestled between the Simonsberg and Helderberg mountain ranges. The fountain in the Waterford courtyard is a symbol of the exuberance of the Waterford Way and the distinctive wines that are born of this land. The varieties planted include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Mourvedre, Barbera, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Sangiovesi. Existing vineyards include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc which are all between 12 and 14 years old.

Road Travel congratulates the Ellerman House team and David Helfgott on their successful evening. Excellent concept, brilliantly executed. We cant wait to see what other magical surprises awaits!

Singita Game Reserve, Kruger National Park

Like the Lebombo Euphorbia tree after which it was named, the design of Lebombo Lodge is one of a kind. From the sweeping wooden decks, you can watch the theatre that unfolds before you, while the lap pool beckons to enjoy a relaxing afternoon. The fifteen suites feature contemporary finishes with beds dressed with Egyptian cotton and silky-soft throws. Enjoy dinner in the boma, then spend the evening, if you so wish, sleeping under the stars on the bed of your private terrace.

Selecting Accommodation

When it comes to selecting accommodation venues for our clients stay, we at Road Travel give first preference to those venues that we have seen and stayed at, placed clients with and the tourism grading standard.

The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) is an organization that ensures the standard of quality accommodation and conference venues throughout South Africa. Through its star grading system, the TGCSA provides a framework and process for the grading of accommodation establishments. Great news is that the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa will implement its improved accommodation grading system from October 2010.

In addition to assuring holidaymakers of a comfortable stay whenever they book into a professionally assessed, star-graded establishment, the new grading criteria will also mean improved consumer protection.

To improve accommodation-grading standards, all TGCSA assessors are being re-trained and will assess properties using the same set of statistically weighted evaluation criteria.

Road Travel work with suppliers that have been evaluated and graded, and therefore offer clients the peace of mind knowing they will get the best.

We provide South Africa accommodation reservations from character hotels to luxurious game lodges. Our hand picked selections of properties are chosen for their superb locations, value for money and excellent service.
As we work with these establishments on a contract basis, the discounts we get are passed on to our clients.

Tell us what type of accommodation you require and we can arrange a quality and enjoyable place to stay that meets all your needs.
